The Bangsansi Surfer
Bangasnsi had been used since Goryeo dynasty, about 920 AD. It was performed 4 times a year in the royal palace as a cleaning ritual. And sometimes at funerals.
Traditionally made with pinewood though, the noble made with paper and the public with straw. It is one of the BIGGEST and HEAVIEST mask!
After the ritual, the mask was burnt. As people believed that the mask catches evils. They wished all that would be gone with the ash.
Padotagi means ‘riding waves’ in Korean. This series was published to revive Korean traditional dance, ‘Talchum’. Unfortunately Talchum is losing its original form and tradition because of lack of young apprentices.
